A meniscus lens is an optical part with one convex surface and one concave surface. It looks like a crescent. It has two types: positive and negative.
A positive meniscus lens gathers light together. A negative meniscus lens spreads light apart. The type depends on the difference between the two surface curvatures.
One of the key advantages of meniscus lenses is their flexibility in controlling optical aberrations. By carefully selecting surface curvatures and lens orientation, optical designers can reduce spherical aberration under certain conditions and improve overall system performance. However, a meniscus shape does not automatically guarantee better optical performance. Factors such as focal length, aperture, refractive index, and the surrounding optical configuration all influence the final result. This makes proper lens design and optimization essential.
Meniscus lenses are widely used in imaging systems, camera lens assemblies, laser beam shaping, optical measurement instruments, and multi-element optical systems requiring aberration correction. At Betensh Optics, we manufacture custom meniscus lenses using various optical materials, with dimensions, surface curvatures, and coatings tailored to specific application requirements.
